Our Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG "Terrazze" in 1,5 Liter Magnum Format.

100% Sangiovese. The very best parcels of Castagnoli are matured in oak for 24 months. The name of our Riserva derives from the ancient Tuscan stone terraces that shape the visual of the vineyards and winery.

Maturation

Aged for 24 months in neutral french oak barriques and tonneaux, before being refined in the bottle for a minimum of twelve months.

Vineyards

Each year, we make a selection of our 19 crus that create our Riserva. In 2015, Ginestrini Alti and Labirinto Ovest produced fruit that we believe showcase the elegance and complexity of our Castagnoli terroir.

Form of Growing

Alberello

Vinification

Grapes are picked by hand in small boxes. Alcoholic fermentation is spontaneous with natural yeasts in 1 ton vats. The extraction of color and tannins is facilitaed by punching down. Maceration of skins is occuring very delicately: Berries are falling from the destemmer directly into the vats without passing through a pump or tubes, hence remaining intact and crush solely due to the weight of berries themselves. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques.

Vintage

A cool spring, warm summer and cold fall caused the fruits to ripen slowly and evenly. Harvest conditions were ideal. The wines of 2016 are very complex: Richness and depth, combined with freshness.

Sangiovese, long misunderstood and blended with other grape varieties, has only been vinified on its own for a few decades. The greatness and potential of Sangiovese is fascinating: Similarly to Pinot Noir, it is very difficult to grow and vinify, as well as incredibly sensitive to the location it is grown in. Although the vineyards at Castagnoli are very close together, the fruit that they produce can show remarkable differences. Therefore, we divided our eleven hectares of vineyards into 19 different parcels, which we harvest, ferment and vinify separately. The best crus of Castagnoli are selected for the Riserva Terrazze.

James Suckling

92 Points: "Impressive richness and soft, fleshy, ripe red and dark cherries on the palate. This has some silky style for Sangiovese, together with lovely, fleshy drive. Drink or hold."

Falstaff

90 Points: "Lively, bright ruby red. Reserved nose, with shy red fruit. On the palate firm with sweet tannins and lively acidity, hearty, long and harmonic finish."
